About

Repaye is a federal program that was created to help you manage your debt and get back on track with your finances. It’s also known as the Repayment Assistance Plan (RAP).

It’s a repayment option for borrowers who are experiencing financial hardship, which means it may not be available to everyone. To find out if you qualify for this repayment plan and how much it could lower your monthly payments, visit StudentLoans.gov/repayment-assistance-plan or call 800-621-3115 to speak directly with a repayer counselor from the U.S. Department of Education

How does it work?

How does it work?

It’s a simple process. The first thing you need to do is sign up for an account on the Repaye website. Once you’ve done that, there are three different ways in which you can make your payments: by debit card, ACH (electronic check), or monthly credit card payments. These payment methods are all available at no cost to you!

Eligibility

To qualify, you must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident who is enrolled in an eligible degree program at an eligible school (as defined by the PSLF program). To be eligible for the PSLF program, you must also meet all of the following requirements:

  • You are enrolled at least half time in your education program and remain so during the 120-month period required to receive forgiveness under this provision;
  • You have made all of your scheduled monthly payments on time; and
  • You do not default on these loans or otherwise fail to honor other terms and conditions associated with them.

Taxability

You should be aware that Repaye is a non-qualified student loan. This means that you cannot deduct the interest paid on your Repaye student loan from your taxes, nor will those payments count as tax-free income. If you have any other questions about how the program works or whether it makes sense for you, we recommend consulting with a professional tax advisor or accountant.

Payment Examples

Repaye is designed to help you pay off your student loan debt faster, while keeping your monthly payment affordable.
